The Second Annual Kirk F. White Motorcars Auction, held April 29, 1972 at Cabrini College in Radnor, Pennsylvania was much larger than the previous one … and even more confusing to figure out.
The sale itself had twice the vehicles, the sell-through rate was a superior 65.6% and the total sale 71.6% greater.
As with 1971 the catalog, supplemental consignments list and results report provided little substantive information on most of the consignments. Just fourteen of the 172 vehicles had chassis numbers … and three of those apparently were withdrawn and didn’t appear in the final results. Seven lots didn’t have a year of manufacture, and three didn’t have a manufacturer’s name. Several lot numbers were noted twice in the results but for different vehicles and amounts. Other vehicles in the results had no lot numbers.
Pulling it all together as best as possible under the circumstances gives this picture:
Year | Cars Sold/ Offered | Sale % | Average Sale | In 2017 Dollars | Median Sale | In 2017 Dollars | Total $ | In 2017 Dollars |
1972 | 107/163 | 65.6% | $4,254 | $26,873 | $2,800
[65.8%] |
$16,632 | $455,165 | $2,703,680 |
1971 | 46/82 | 56.1% | $5,763 | $35,882 | $3,500
[60.7%] |
$21,420 | $265,100 | $1,622,412 |
[2017 dollars based on the U.S. Department of Labor Consumer Price Index, $5.94/$1 for 1972 and $6.12/$1 for 1971.]
The concept of adjusting for inflation was sufficiently intriguing that I have included the same calculation for all the 2nd Annual KFW Motorcars Auction. It brings up some useful insights. Here are some examples:
- The values of mainstream cars – Fords, Chevys, the Plymouth convertible, MG TD – both then and now are comparable in terms of the dollar’s purchasing power.
- A case in point is the Rajo head Model T Speedster sold for $1,700 ($10,098 in 2017 dollars.) RM Sotheby’s sold a similar T Speedster with a Rajo head at Hershey in October for $9,500, $10,450 with commission.
- More exotic cars have escalated much further away from mainstream collectors’ resources. Examples are:
- Packard 734 Speedster;
- Ferrari Superamerica;
- Ferrari 275 LM;
- The no-saled Mercedes S Roadster (even if it was a cabriolet).
This is the T Speedster sold by RM at Hershey.
I hope it makes for an interesting and informative discussion.
