The First Annual Kirk F. White Motorcars Auction, Radnor, Pennsylvania, May 1, 1971

This auction report might be considered a little late, being 46 years after the fact, but it does serve to highlight some of the changes in the past five decades.

Kirk F. White is an entrepreneur of renown, something that showed early on with this ground-breaking sale of collector cars under a yellow-and-white striped 15,000 square foot tent in the parking lot of St. Martin’s Episcopal Church in Radnor, Pennsylvania.

It wasn’t the first collector car auction by a long shot, but it was the first to exploit extensive publicity and promotion to achieve national recognition. It set the pattern with a lavish (for the time) photo-illustrated catalog, a gathering of attractive, easily recognized classic and post-classic era luxury and sports cars and a welcoming atmosphere.

Admission was five bucks and included free champagne; a reported 3,470 people showed up for the party. 369 of them were described as obtaining bidders paddles.

On the block was the redoubtable Omar Landis from Ephrata, Pennsylvania, a commanding presence whose delivery still echoes today in the chant, and the one-liners, of every American auctioneer of old cars.

The New York Times sent John S. Radosta, Sports Illustrated dispatched Robert F. Jones. Radosta’s report was old-time Times sober. Jones was a lot more colorful, in the style of today’s Jason Gay and Dan Neal of the Wall Street Journal.

There were some notable differences from today. Sellers paid all the auction commissions: 12% on sold cars, 3½% on passed lots. The catalog order and the sell-order were completely different. There were 60 cars in the catalog (of which 12 got cold feet and didn’t show up on auction day) but 82 cars made the show. No record of a supplemental catalog listing of the 22 added lots has ever been found.

[If someone has one, please copy and e-mail it to me.]

Chassis and engine numbers were notable by their absence, as the following report will show. And even some of the numbers reported were obtained by deductive sleuthing, not from the catalog.

In the end 46 of 82 cars that crossed the block were hammered sold for a total of $265,100. That’s a 56.1% sell-through and a $5,763 average, 58% more than the $3,364 MSRP of a 1971 Chevelle SS Sport Coupe with the base 402/300hp V8 and Hydramatic. Five lots, including the headline Duesenberg Model J Barrel-Side Phaeton at the sale’s top bid of $66,000, were unsold on bids higher than the best sale of $20,000. Hammer bids on unsold cars were just over $100,000 more than the total of sold cars.

On the basis of those numbers Kirk F. White Motorcars Auction, Inc. grossed something like $42,000, which in 1971 wasn’t a bad payday, even after pouring cases of champagne.

But it isn’t the totals that make this sale important, it’s the effect it had in energizing interest in old cars. It initiated a trend that would crawl slowly upward from here.

E.D. Screes, buyer of the top lot, drove out of St. Martin’s parking lot in his Cream and Orange 1931 Auburn Twelve Speedster, headed for his Indianapolis home in it, across three states, observing, “Shouldn’t take me more than fifteen hours.”

The lots below suffer from a paucity of information. They are therefore sorted by Marque, Model, Body Style and Year. Within that sort there are some telling comparisons; like the Ferrari Lusso, 275 GTB and 250 GTO and the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud I all bid to the same $6,500.

How things have diverged since 1971.

[If anyone has more information on the cars in this sale, particularly chassis and engine numbers, I hope you’ll share.]

Hello, I have a copy of the supplemental cars list from the 1st Kirk White Auction. Email me with an email address and I’ll scan and send to you as a pdf. I also have some articles from the auction, including from the New York Times, and a final sales results list. I was 16 when my neighbor, Kirk White, organized and ran the auction at St. Martin’s Church. I worked there at the time on weekends and had almost unlimited access to the grounds during the auction. I have some B&W photos from the 2nd auction at Cabrini College the next year, if you’d like those as well.
