Sebring 12-Hour Endurance Race — March 27, 1965
The timekeeper recorded “Hill” as the driver from lap 112 and showing “McLaren” from lap 149 although the lap time clearly shows there was no pit stop until lap 152. This was, however, during the deluge which drowned the track, making the scorer’s confusion understandable. It’s possible Phil Hill, who was driving car #10, the other GT40, when it broke a spring mount on lap 38, might have subbed in the McLaren/Miles car. On page 137 of
Friedman/Patrick’s “Corvette Grand Sport”, it mentions Hill substituting but it refers to him driving a Cobra Daytona coupe during “The Deluge”, an observation seconded in Mike Shoen’s “The Cobra-Ferrari Wars.” The timing is consistent with the time he is shown in this car. I should probably ask Phil.
I did (ask Phil Hill, that is.) He confirms that he subbed in the Daytona Coupe after the GT40 in which he was entered broke, not the other GT40 so it is likely the timekeeper was blinded in the deluge.
